Javier Pérez Pallarés

Title: MD
Position: Interventional Pulmonologist At High Complexity Interventional Pulmonology Unit
Organization: General Universitary Hospital Santa Lucía, Cartagena
Country: Spain

Dr. Javier Pérez Pallarés was born in 1979 in Cartagena, a beautiful coastal city in southeastern Spain. He earned his degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Murcia. His passion for studying and treating respiratory diseases led him to specialize in Pulmonology at La Fe University Hospital in Valencia, home to one of the most prestigious pulmonology units in the country.

Recognizing early on the potential impact of new technologies on patient care, Dr. Pérez Pallarés pursued further training in Interventional Pulmonology. He earned university diplomas as an expert in Pleural Pathology and Thoracic Ultrasound from the University of Barcelona and several postgraduate master’s degrees, including the prestigious Master’s in Interventional Pulmonology from the University of Córdoba. His training was further enhanced by stays at renowned national and international centers.

Dr. Pérez Pallarés’ extensive work and training led the Spanish Society of Pulmonology (SEPAR) to entrust him with the task of writing their Manual of Thoracic Ultrasound. Since then, he has expanded his scientific contributions by authoring and co-authoring numerous articles in highly regarded national and international journals, writing multiple chapters in pulmonology books, organizing courses—both in-person and online—for pulmonologists and doctors worldwide, and participating as a speaker and moderator in numerous national and international congresses.

In his relentless fight against cancer, Dr. Pérez Pallarés, alongside his dear friend Dr. Miguel Ariza, developed the “Ariza-Pallarés Method” for performing mediastinal cryobiopsies guided by EBUS, a technique they named CryoEBUS. This innovation has revolutionized the diagnosis and prognosis of many cancers globally, and Dr. Pérez Pallarés has traveled to hospitals worldwide to train pulmonologists in this technique, aiming to ensure it reaches every patient in need. By enabling much earlier and more comprehensive cancer diagnoses, CryoEBUS has the potential to improve survival rates for many types of cancer.

Although Dr. Pérez Pallarés finds his greatest reward in helping his patients daily, his years of dedication were recognized when he received the National Medicine Award in Pulmonology in 2023.

He currently practices in the High Complexity Interventional Pulmonology Unit at Santa Lucía University General Hospital in Cartagena, serves as Medical Director of the Andreo Clinical Institute, and heads the Pulmonology Department at HLA La Vega Hospital in Murcia.

On a scientific level, Dr. Pérez Pallarés holds the position of Vice President of the Spanish Association of Respiratory Endoscopy and Interventional Pulmonology (AEER) and serves as Regent for Spain in the World Association of Bronchoscopy and Interventional Pulmonology (WABIP).

Driven by his commitment to involving society in the fight against smoking and cancer, Dr. Pérez Pallarés’ latest endeavor is the creation of the “Dr. Pérez Pallarés Foundation.” The foundation’s goals include preventing smoking among minors, creating smoking cessation programs for adults, promoting early lung cancer detection, and humanizing the experience of cancer patients and their families.
