Professor Stefano Gasparini is a Consultant in Interventional Pneumology (bronchoscopic procedures with rigid and flexible instruments; echobronchoscopy; transbronchial lung biopsy of peripheral lung lesions; therapeutic bronchoscopy) at the Thoracic Surgery Unit of the IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital in Milan directed by Professor Giampiero Negri.
Graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Ancona in 1979, he specialized in Pneumology at the University of Naples in 1982.
In 1985 he obtained the Specialty in Respiratory Physiopathology and Physiokinesitherapy at the University of Naples and in 1990 the Specialty in Anesthesia and Resuscitation at the University of Ancona.
In 1981 he completed a training period at Hopkins University in Baltimore (USA) on methods of transbronchial sampling of lung and mediastinal lesions.
From 2012 to 2019 Director of the Complex Pneumology Operating Unit of the Ospedali Riuniti of Ancona.
Associate Professor (2012-2018) and then Full Professor (2018-2022) of Respiratory Diseases at the Polytechnic University of Marche.
Director of the School of Specialization in Respiratory Diseases at the Polytechnic University of Marche from 2015 to 2022.
From 2012 to 2014 Head of the “Interventional Pneumology” Study Group of the European Respiratory Society (ERS).
From 2016 to 2018 National President of the Italian Association of Hospital Pneumology (AIPO).
In 2018 he received the Killian Award for best bronchoscopy in the world from the World Society of Interventional Bronchology and Pulmonology (WABIP).
Since 2022 he has been President of the World Society of Interventional Bronchology and Pneumology (WABIP).
Main field of clinical interest: Bronchoscopy and Interventional Pneumology methods, especially for the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer.
From 1980 to 2022 he performed as first operator: 22,651 bronchoscopies, of which 2,685 transbronchial lung biopsies, 4,210 transbronchial biopsies of lo-mediastinal lesions (EBUS-TBNA), 2,350 endoscopic bronchial surgery procedures with laser and/or placement of bronchial endoprostheses
Since 1984 he has focused his research activity mainly in the field of interventional pulmonology, focusing in particular on the development and application of new biopsy techniques for the diagnosis of peripheral lung lesions and mediastinal expansive processes.
In recent years, research activity has focused on the possibilities of bronchoscopic sampling techniques in the histological and biomolecular characterization of lung tumors. This activity led to the publication of 373 scientific works, 176 of which in international journals (h-index = 29).
